Dan,

I don’t know where I would be, without you. I know we like to make light of our first meeting - you, charming me while I was in dire straits, you, extending an arm to genteelly escort me back to my rooms - but I am not certain that you can ever truly know what it did for me, to encounter you there.

I was a mess, truly - and I’m sure to that you would shake your head genially, smile that little crooked smile that makes my stomach turn over, and say something like “nah, princess, you were prettier’n a field of hubflowers.” My point still stands, because you are a marvelously biased man and I appreciate the erasure of my humiliating circumstances to better soften the memory.

I think about that day, often. I like to crystallise it in my mind, like an insect trapped in the hardened resin of amber, something to hold close and dear when I worry about the possibility of you leaving this place. Leaving me.

It is perhaps maudlin of me to even write this, knowing that the chances of the opposite happening are so very slim. A morbid habit I have adopted after too many losses and too many fears, realised. You know me inside and out, darling, you know my heart, and you know what scares me the most.

I want you to stay so badly that it frightens me; the depth of my need, my dependence upon you to make me feel whole. You were piecing fragments together without knowing it, and I apologise for not telling you sooner how much it meant to me that you held my hand without judgement, or pity. I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape.

If I ever tore your heart to bits, fraught with anxious desperation for my safety, trust that I never meant to hurt you. I love you, dear Dan.

Love is difficult, and messy. Love is pressing a knife into someone’s hands and showing them the places where they can cut the deepest. Use your discretion, your strength, your power. You have weapons that are not the muscle memory of your hands curling into fists or your teeth, bared and bloody.

Provided you are still in residence when this missive is received, I think that the pair of us know the mantle of Premiere Wonderland librarian has passed to your deserving and weary shoulders. I know that you will treat the stacks with the same respect and care with which you treat every one of your endeavours.

In difficult times you have been a dear and supportive confidante, a man worthy of the trust that is placed in him. I know that the frustrations of being so temporally displaced are a nuisance at best, but you are a determined fellow and I have every confidence in your ability to right wrongs when you see them, and to be a welcoming face for those with questions begging answers.

I will sorely miss our talks of philosophy, of language.

I want the best things for you, because you have lost so very much, and been hurt so very deeply. I have assumed for some time that your taciturn nature is a product of grief and fear and know you would prefer to avoid the open discussion thereof, that you would rather not speak to it at all, if it can be helped.

So let us not. You were kind enough to teach me how to make American pancakes, after all, and that is no mean feat when I have little patience for culinary efforts.

What you do is like taking the blame for an earthquake, or a force of nature. Please forgive yourself.

I wish that I could make you happy. God knows you’ve earned it.

I realise the material is not as detailed as I imagine you would prefer, but I hope that it serves as a satisfactory base upon which to codify your own system. I imagine you will do great things here, and wish I could know you better.

I want you to be happy, and I know that you are, by habit and attitude, dissatisfied with this place and how you fit into it. Telling you to look on the positive side is a fruitless effort, but I want you to try.

I used my last free ticket with the vendors outside to purchase this photograph for you.

I know we’ve never agreed on a great many things, particularly after what happened to Philip, but I have a deep respect of and appreciation for the leadership role you have taken in Wonderland, and the proactive means by which you seek to mitigate unnecessary risks.

I am leaving the Death Watch data with you. I trust you to be discerning about potential hazards and careful with the information, as it is extremely sensitive material. You will notice that my status has recently been changed from four deaths, to five. I was murdered the last day of the carnival by Dan Palmer's Mirror and recovered in Frank Castle's unique care. The resurrection took an unexpected four days' time.

Neither myself nor Frank understand why it happened this way, but I hope that you believe me when I say that to the best of my knowledge, I did not encounter the Queen of Hearts in that dark space, waiting to return. I did not come forward publicly, afraid of the implications and what I might be accused of. Afraid of how people would treat me, after everything. Please know that five deaths may not mean what we thought it means.

Working with you on a professional level is an honour I will not soon forget.

Firstly, no, that is never going to get old for me, and if you didn’t want to be mocked by linguists you wouldn’t have chosen such a preposterously redundant surname. This is by no means your fault - Christian literature is pervasive and quite adamant about dehumanising you, which is a great shame - but has a way of being surprising, nonetheless. I regret not engaging you more frequently in theological tête-à-têtes. You’re terribly fun to be around.

You are my oldest friend, dearest to my heart in every regard. Selfless and compassionate and understanding and reliable: all of the marvelous qualities that make up a person who has earned far more than what he has been given. I can hear you denying this already, and I hope that you in turn can adequately imagine the face I am making at you for being such an abominable prat about it.

There was a time, once, when I thought about us. About the possibility of us becoming an Us, but I was fragile and worn thin, like overused porcelain, and you were not ready. We’re a pair of ships passing in the night, I think - lost prospects and lost time, one only coming when the other calls out of distress. I do not regret the turns we have taken, only that I did not enjoy them more as they happened. I suppose that is the way all regrets are, in the end.

I know that you believe you are selfish, but you are more deserving of happiness than anyone I have ever known. Let yourself have it. Don’t push it away out of fear for what reaching out might do.

We never talked as much as I believe we should have. I took advantage of your generosity in asking for advice, once, and you were kind enough to indulge me. Though I do not know the intimate circumstances of your world I believe that you know loss well, and you bear it as an admirable sort of badge, a confidence that cannot be shaken.

I admire you, for what you stand for and the strength of your convictions. You have all the makings of a quiet leader, one who tolerates no fools and possesses a boundless compassion.

In the package you will find a pair of gold-plated weapons, the shape and style of which I believe originated from the Indian trishula. They are effective in hand-to-hand combat, and these are as deadly as they are attractive. I hope you find them useful.

It is a difficult thing for me to admit, particularly given what I have lost and regained and lost again, but you have always reminded me of my son: ceaselessly searching, perpetually asking, getting into anything and everything for the express purpose of learning and being learned.

Everyone always says that “curiosity killed the cat” - the lesser-known second part of that phrase is “and satisfaction brought it back.” Do not let your inquisitiveness be stifled, Dipper. Find the answers you seek, but do not think you have to carry those questions around on your own. Trust others to help. Reach out.

You take yourself very seriously, which is admirable at your age, but you needn’t. No man is an island entire of itself.

We didn’t start out on the best of terms, which I realise is a very gentle way of referring to the bloodbath that incited me to seek you out in the first place.

I understand you better, now. I appreciate your love of and devotion to family, the same sentiments that have driven me to make difficult choices in even more difficult times. You have traveled a very long and unfair road, and I hope that one day you will be permitted to find a peace of your own, to be pursued no longer by the forces that have made your life so hard.

I have left an artefact with you. It is called the Spear of Osiris, and it pre-dates the Old Kingdom. When twisted the proper way it expands into a weapon, and is purportedly the only thing that can kill the Scorpion King when he rises from his slumber. You may find it an intriguing object to leave upon the shelf, or may have other uses for its connexion to the occult of the ancient world.

Thank you for the times you have been so generous as to use your talents and knowledge to put me at ease. I am glad to call you a friend.
